Thorn was a mischievous child. He grew up in the church due to being an orphan. He always showed some kind of a magic ability, but never really took to his studies seriously at being a mage as he always had his head in the clouds, maybe someday was his response. Instead he loved the freedom of the outdoors and being in the forest, hunting, tracking, and seeking out his prey.
Thorn’s family was killed during a raid and the children were all spared as the adults of the village were slaughtered. He was brought to Korvosa and raised in the orphanage there ran by the church of Sarenrae, but he was not much of a believer in the gods and preferred to rely on himself when growing up and his own skills and abilities. He did appreciate the grounds keeper and ranger who was an older human male by the name of Liopicat at the church who had taught him to shoot a bow, defend himself and was a mentor and father figure to him. Teaching him where the church could not.
Growing older he took over the responsibilities of being the hunter for the church as Liopicat retired to provide food for the other children in the orphanage to give back what they haven given him. He even took an odd job here and there to act as a scout, a guide, and a tracker to put coin in his pocket.
Liopicat eventually had passed away due to old age, and always told Thorn that he was destined for greater things and to seek out his fortune and never let that wanderlust leave his eyes.
You may ask why he was called Thorn? When he was found in the village after the attack a rosewood finely crafted thorn bow was in his crib with him, so it seemed fitting. Maybe one day someone will recognize the bow he carries and solve the mystery of who he really is.
